It's the Small Things that Matter

Today was blog writing day. I've been a little delinquent in getting my thoughts together. I started writing about shopping locally (please do!) but was just interrupted by a student from St. Edward's. She popped into the shop to tell me to "have an amazing day." She handed me a piece of paper that says "Community Matters" and "One kind word can change someone's entire day." She was right. It did change my day. That girl with the big, genuine smile became my inspiration for today's blog.

One thing I love about working at Jake by the Lake is how they give back to the community whether it be within the small boundaries of Westport or on a wider scale such as the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. We've raised money for this great cause in the past and this October, we revive our Pumpkins for Wishes campaign. In it's 10th year, the campaign raises money by selling pumpkins perfect for decorating your home or porch for Fall or for making the quintessential Halloween jack o' lantern. Each pumpkin is $10 and 100% of the proceeds are given to Children's Wish. The pumpkins are sourced locally at Mensen's farm in Delta and are available for the month of October at the store. Not from the area? Send us an email at to find out how to donate online.

It's ironic that I ended up working in a place that supports Children's Wish as my family will be applying to CWF on behalf of my daughter, Ruby, this December. Ruby will be 3 in December (minimum age to request a Wish) and although Ruby is not terminal, she does have a shortened life expectancy because of a rare neurological disease. I love that I can be a part of giving back to a charity that will hopefully enhance Ruby's quality of life. Ruby has taught me patience, empathy and most of all, that it's the small things that matter. Have an amazing day!
